Testing 17pro Front Camera, Feel Special XTReme

I changed 4 times to test the colours on this, because I am highly sceptical of front cameras. This one did ok. I will have to see how it does in low light. Then I will do tests to compare with the back cameras. It shoots 4K HDR by default, but I seem to downgrade to hd in postprod (? think so).

Normally I never use front cameras. Basically I tape them and always take selfies with the back camera on ultrawide for a more natural look… Well up until now that is. I had heard so much about this device’s front camera that I had to test it. Honestly, it is doing a decent job. It doesn’t go as far as I expected, as you can’t control the aperture (or anything really except exposure), but for a front cam, I am impressed with the detail and color rendering for an overall natural look. It also allows you to keep the phone vertical while shooting horizontal which is likely useful if you are expected to be looking directly into the camera.

Disclaimer: Given how low the CAD dollar is at the moment, this device is too expensive if you don’t shoot a lot. Btw, I think this is strictly a camera device. Given that the North American version doesn’t take physical sim cards, it cuts you off from the whole rest of the world that uses the physical sim standard. I tried to import a European version from the UK, but I can’t insure it in Canada (only in the UK) and I’ve been told that Canadian carriers are trying to block the Euro-models from working with local sims, which, if true, would absolutely end up in a class action due to this being an indirect anti-trust attempt to lock phones and users.

So, I would recommend the device strictly as a camera, but I see no use for it as a phone in North America and Mexico.
